Assimilating ecological theory with empiricism: Using constrained generalized additive models to enhance survival analyses

چکیده
Integrating ecological theory with empirical methods is ubiquitous in ecology using hierarchical Bayesian models. However, there has been little development focused on integration of into models for survival analysis. Survival a fundamental process, linking individual fitness population dynamics, but incorporating life history strategies to inform estimation can be challenging because mortality processes occur at multiple scales. We develop an approach analysis, model constraints based species' strategy functional analytical tools. Specifically, we structurally separate intrinsic patterns that arise from age-specific (e.g. increasing during early stages due growth or maturation, versus senescence) extrinsic over different periods time seasonal temporal shifts). use shape constrained generalized additive (CGAMs) obtain hazard functions incorporate theoretical information classical survivorship curves the age component and capture factors component. compare performance our modelling standard tools do not explicitly species structure, metrics predictive power, accuracy, efficiency computation time. applied these two case studies reflect shapes underlying curves, examining age-period white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus Wisconsin, USA Columbian sharp-tailed grouse Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus Colorado, USA. found included effects CGAMs outperformed did include explicit constraints. demonstrate data-driven easily extendable analysis by showing its utility rates probabilities, accounting heterogeneity across ages time, very species. show how models, statistical methods, enhances analyses.

Analysis of Heart Transplant Survival Data Using Generalized Additive Models
The Stanford Heart Transplant data were collected to model survival in patients using penalized smoothing splines for covariates whose values change over the course of the study. The basic idea of the present study is to use a logistic regression model and a generalized additive model with B-splines to estimate the survival function. We model survival time as a function of patient covariates an...
متن کاملConstrained Generalized Additive Models for Zero-Inflated Data
Zero-inflated data abound in ecological studies as well as in other scientific and quantitative fields. Nonparametric regression with zero-inflated response may be studied via the Zero-Inflated Generalized Additive Model (ZIGAM). ZIGAM assumes that the response variable follows a probabilistic mixture distribution of a zero atom and a regular component whose distribution belongs to some 1-param...
متن کاملSurvival Data Analysis with Time-Dependent Covariates Using Generalized Additive Models
We discuss a flexible method for modeling survival data using penalized smoothing splines when the values of covariates change for the duration of the study. The Cox proportional hazards model has been widely used for the analysis of treatment and prognostic effects with censored survival data. However, a number of theoretical problems with respect to the baseline survival function remain unsol...
متن کاملUsing generalized additive models to reduce residual confounding.
Traditionally, confounding by continuous variables is controlled by including a linear or categorical term in a regression model. Residual confounding occurs when the effect of the confounder on the outcome is mis-modelled. A continuous representation of a covariate was previously shown to result in a less biased estimate of the adjusted exposure effect than categorization provided the function...
متن کاملUsing generalized additive (mixed) models to analyze single case designs.
This article shows how to apply generalized additive models and generalized additive mixed models to single-case design data. These models excel at detecting the functional form between two variables (often called trend), that is, whether trend exists, and if it does, what its shape is (e.g., linear and nonlinear). In many respects, however, these models are also an ideal vehicle for analyzing ...
